Description

Rochester Optical Empire State 8x10 Large Format Portrait Camera with 2 Film Holders This antique Rochester Optical Empire State 8x10 camera is in beatuiful condition and is one of the earliest examples the the Empire State before being purchased by Kodak. There are a few minor dings and scuffs in the wood, but the finish is in exceptional condition. It's so nice we think it was possibly refinished at some point, but if it was, that person did amazing work. The brass hardware does show a little wear and tarnish in places but it is that slight patina that gives it it's character. All of the hardware looks complete and functional, even the leveling bulb is intact. The are a couple chips in the wood where the extension rail joins the base, but it is only noticable when the rail is removed and it does not seem to affect functionality. The bellows feel a bit stiff when extended and it does look like there are a few pinhole leaks in them, but they also look repairable. The ground glass on the back does NOT look original and does not look like it was completed as the corners are rough and the guide lines are penciled in, another indication that this camera was a restoration project. We do NOT have the lens board or a lens to go with it. But we do have two original film holders with this camera. These film holders are stamped on each side. One side is stamped with 'Rochester Optical Co.' and the other is stamped 'Pat. July 29, 1890'. As nice as this camera is, the case is in horrible condition. The leather straps are stiff but in okay shape, but the handle is duct taped, the sides are splitting, the outer fabric is peeling on the bottom and the interior is worn and dirty. However, we believe this was the original case and despite its condition, it will help protect the camera, so it will be included. Overall this is one of the nicest large format cameras we have seen and it is truely in exceptional condition. Finishing up the ground glass and add a period lens and this would be a museum quality piece that would look great in any collection. This camera will be packaged securely and with the utmost care and will be shipped Ground service with appropriate insurance to ensure safe delivery. The camera and rail will be bubble wrapped inside the case. The film holders will be bubble wrapped but will be outside the case. They will all fit inside the case when unwrapped. While we understand shipping fees may seem high, it takes extra to insure an item like this, so please bear that in mind. We have free returns turned off on this listing. The reason for that is there is no way to insure a return label.
